Reasons why I can’t support England in the World Cup

Before I start, I just want to clarify that I’m as English as Fish and Chips.

After watching the England vs USA match yesterday, and not being very excited before the game, I was even less excited once the game was over, and I just couldn’t get into the whole England supporting thing.

The main reasons are quite obvious. I could never cheer on a team consisting of Ashley Cole, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney. Funny enough, of all the players I don’t actually mind the Tottenham contingent. It’s the four players I’ve mentioned, and those four alone as to why I will be cheering on France, Holland and Spain in the World Cup. I’d rather see Fabregas, Gallas, Sagna, Clichy and van Persie win the World Cup. It would be saying something though if Diaby was one of the few players in our squad to have won a World Cup.

For me, it’s exactly like cheering on English teams in the Champions League. I just cannot work out how rival fans can do that. Sure, the national team is a great way of bringing together fans from all over the country, and that’s lovely. There is nothing nicer than seeing Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United and Man City fans all rejoicing in the spirit of the football. It’s great to see.

If England won the World Cup, firstly I’d be amazed, but I’d be fearful of the press arse-licking Rooney for the next 12 months or so.

That’s another thing, the press. Rob Green is the country’s villain. He made one mistake, albeit a shocker, but the likes of SWP, Rooney, Lampart, etc. are absolutely diabolical and they get away scot-free. After yesterday’s performance, if people are still believing that Rooney is the best player in the Premiership, then I’ll tell you you’re an idiot. Fabregas is the best player in the Premiership, and the stats prove that.

Heskey, as much as everyone hates to admit it, was England’s best player yesterday, and if England do win the World Cup then he really does need to play as he offers a lot to the team. He may not score goals, but neither did Stéphane Guivarc’h when France won the World Cup in 1998.

I’m just glad Rio Ferdinand is injured, as I couldn’t actually bear to watch the games with that prick playing.

  • There isn’t much to be disagreed with there!

  • well everyone knows that it was not Green that lost England the victory today. It was Heskey that did not score, it was lennon that did not dare to shoot. It was just as much the rest of the teams failure to goal as greens blunder.

Infact USA was closer to win with Altidors shoot that Green deflected in the second half than england was.

Leaving Walcott home was just utterly stupid. With 15 mins left, what match winner can Capello now throw on? SWP? Millner? Lennon? Atlest Walcott has proven over and over again how he can make big impacts in huge games. He has played enough important cl games to stand any preassure. Have any of the others played any important games outside England?

Shame on you Capello. Walcott could have won you matches alone, something Lennon and SWP wont do…

  • Totally agree. Walcott is the one player at a time like that, who could come on and win the game. There are no match winners from the bench. Walcott does it in big games too.

  • if fabregas is the best player in the premiership. were does that leave RVP, torres, drogba AND tevez.

  • I have said it from the onset that fab capello isn’t a good manager. He took him all the time given before he could summit his lists, and at the end of the day,he still got it wrong by excluding T.Walcot andD.Bent from the squad.Well,English team is not my concern, all i wish is seeing RVP coming out winning the golden boot after the tournament

  • Diaby was the only interesting player in the france team. I can’t stand watching them under domenech, he just makes them so boring to watch. At least diaby can beat a man and make something happen.
Apart from the little dig at diaby I agree. The england national team sucks. They played well yesterday and probably deserved to win, but Im glad they didn’t.

  • I’ve been waiting for an article like this for ages, I haven’t supported England since 2002, because back then we has Keown, Seaman, Campbell and C****, and we were the champions. I don’t plan on supporting England again till Gibbs, Walcott and Wilshere are all in the first team with those spuds and chavs not included. 5 spuds along with chavs and rooney is too much for me, England could have done with Walcott yesterday and my theory is those chavs like lampard and terry had an influence in Capellos decision. I’m supporting Holland or France but not Spain because it may further increase Cescs decision to leave.

  • Great article 100% agree. I would also add Gerrard to the list?

  • Arsene Wenger

I had the same view – I couldn’t support England. As an Arsenal fan cheering the likes of; John Terry, Ashley Cole, et al, just really isn’t worth bearing. I then realised that I would prefer the French, Dutch and the Spaniards to exit the World Cup early as this would mean that Arsenal players are less likely to get injured (I know this may seem far fetched), or to be less fatigued as other player in the top sides in the prem.

i’m hoping for a few injuries, especially for cole or even better adebayor!!!

  • adebayor isn’t at the world cup fool

  • He’s acting as a pundit on the BBC though, which is bad enough.

  • I find that I am turning off the sound when Ade commentates because he is not fit for purpose in that respect – I think he should first be made to review and discuss his own performances ( not our problem now anyhow so I don’t care – just don’t think he should be talking about anything).

I think the football played by England is really poor and watching other matches shows how it should be played at this level. They don’t look comfortable or confident on the ball and the players clear frustration is bourne out of lack of ability. A lot of players seem past it, or not up to WC standards.

I can easily get behind the national squad no matter what team they play for, in the same way I can grudingly appreciate a ronaldo moment of genius. What is hard to stomach is this bunch of grating, pretentious and overrated players whom have been picked as England’s finest. They have brilliant maketing and media PR, but not a lot else!

  • totally agree, a very mature way of looking at the team. I would much rather see an English team with the likes of Hart, Scott Parker, Jagielka, Baines, Bent, Big Sol even gary Neville at right back. Ledley King (invalid), Lampard (shit for country), Crouch (Slow motion bean pole) – just not good enough for the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Holland etc

  • Being an Arsenal fan, i’d rather see Van Persie, or Fabregas win the World Cup…Fuck England…Fuck the fucking Cappello!

  • Walcott just couldn’t get the ball to rooney time and time again, he’s done it himself as you have to prove you can do it on the international stage. Nasri was the surprise really.

  • nah i agree 50% of what he is saying because i want england to win but i dont think they will win without walcott and the way they played against usa was devastating but at the end of the day you are all english and therefore should support england but i agree about heskey rooney was shit. fabregas is not the best in the prem ARSENAL ARE.

ENGLAND ARE NEVER GONNA WIN THE WORLD CUP WITH THAT SQAUD .

  • good article i feel the same way

  • did u all see the germans tonight? wow! absolutely sintilating breath taking stuff. that’s called team work. everyone worked for each other and every player had its own leader. enggland will never be like that in a quadrillion years.

  • Royal_Arsenal11

great article mate, i cant completely agree with you cause i’m not british, but i can say that even though i’m a very loyal arsenal supporter (much more so than any other team in the world, including our very own american football or basketball or whatever sport) i could not find it in me to root for england for the same reason that you do. i think the on-field and off-field behavior of the named english players is simply embarrassing and i really cannot support a team with players like that. and i also agree, it has nothing to do with the fact that they are rival players, they are just bad people. but anyway, go netherlands and usa!

  • So you can’t support the England National Squad because the players are all signed to rival teams.

Who doesn’t agree that this one of the most retarded statements on football blogs. I don’t understand why I’m even replying to the blog. For a start you’re not as English as fish and chips because you don’t support England, and it’s usually foreign people who associate us with Fish and Chips.

I have my own theory why you can’t support England and why a few agree with you, but never mind, the cricket starts soon and you’ll be able to support your country in that when they play England.

  • Arsenal1Again, Fish and Chips is English. Thank you.

  • The main reason for struggling to cheer on England is down to the character and off-field antics of most players.
Rooney likes to fuck grannies, Gerrard has got a 16-year-old pregnant, Terry is Terry, I’m the only person who hasn’t received a text message of Ashley Cole’s cock, although his phone is probably up Jermaine Pennant’s arshole, and Lampard is a fat old prick. That’s why I cannot support these players.

  • Wow, I am shocked.
The majority of Arsenal fans refuse to support England because of the foreign contingent in the club football. What a load of rubbish, to be honest. None of you deserve to call yourselves English if you’d rather see Holland or France win just because one or two of them play for Arsenal. Disgraceful.

  • Elliot, people don’t have to support England! Surely, we can support who we want?

  • It seems stupid that English people should support anyone but England, just because you don’t like a team that one or two of them play for. No patriotism these days. I don’t know how you would have fared 70 years ago.

  • I’m not a patriotic man to be honest with you Elliot, but that’s just my choice.
I’m going to appreciate the football, regardless of the winner.
I don’t support England, but that’s my choice. I’d like one of the Arsenal players to win the World Cup, but I’m not really cheering on any team. I don’t care for international football, as I believe it died about 15 years ago.
In my opinion, international football died when players were no longer proud to play for England, and every single English player in the Premiership seemed to bet getting capped for England. Only the best players should be capped for their countries, and international players should be chosen on form, not reputation.

  • just because arsenal is full of foreigners you wont support the national team. you dont deserve to be an english football fan

  • While I share the general disdain for Rooney, Cashley, Terry and Lumpard, for better or worse I am English and at the World Cup support the national team. Wish we had the silky skills of Spain or guile of the Dutch though.

And for LiKee who says “Fuck England” – Fuck you first mate.
