WENGER HAS GONE MENTAL

I read some comments on the official Arsenal website today from Arsene Wenger, and for the first time under the reign of our great manager, I actually believe he has gone one step too far and finally lost the plot.

The comments I’m talking about are the ones where he is comparing Abou Diaby to the great Patrick Vieira.

“There are similarities,”

Now, they are both tall and black, but that is exactly where the similarities end.

“They are the same stature and the same size…”

Fair enough, exactly as I said, they are both tall.

“…and have the similar style.”

No, no, no, no, no!! That is where Arsene lost the plot. Similar style? In what way? Did Vieira lose the ball 90% of the time, then score a goal and undo the other 89 minutes of misery? No! Diaby is shit, Vieira is an Arsenal legend, one of the greatest players ever to wear the red and white. Do not ever compare the players.

“But there is a lot of room for him to get where Patrick was.”

To be fair, there is a lot of room for me to get where Theirry Henry was, and I do mean a lot of room. I think Wenger may have just got himself out of that hole with the final comment.

Diaby – a firm favourite amongst idiots who know nothing about football.

the only other similarity is the extremely quick feet both players have
in fact i think diaby may have better dribbling skills than vieira, on the floor at least
fair enough he hasnt done anything to be compared to vieira yet, and vieira is a legend, obviously, but diaby will be a really great player for us
the similarities may be mostly aesthetic, but diaby has the talent to reach the heights of vieira as a player
this sort of thing is getting old anyway
everyone said eboue was useless, now he shows hes a pretty good player
everyone said song was shit, look at him now, everyone wants him in the team
    ditto bendtner
diaby is frustrating, but some of the goals and performances have shown he has considerable talent and isnt shit as u claim
hes definitely inconsistent right now but there’s a long way to go

m8 I love Viera but Diaby is not shit nor Bentder, I`m sure it`s your personal opinion but don`t undermine our own players. Diaby can play advanced roles unlike Viera. IF he keeps fit he`ll become a brilliant player. he`s Viera, Petit, Bergkamp all in one. but still he`s working progress, he`s only going to get better. Don`t boo him, support our players.

P.S.- I know some stuff about football

Diaby IS a better version of Viera! Only a dumbass compares a young Diaby with Viera in his prime. His progress has been hampered by that horrific season-ending injury which kept him out for so long. He already has better ball control skills, and will just get stronger and stronger. Don’t forget Viera could turn in some fairly uninspired performances as well.
Like Mal says, support your team. If it wasn’t for whiners like you the Arsenal would have had better vocal support at the beginning of the season when then they really needed it.

Give him time, he was one of the best yougnster in the French league before joining us.
He might come up really good, time will tell…….

i wonder who’s the idiot who knows nothing about football, by booing diaby and saying wenger lost the plot. now that sounds like an idiot!

  6. Someone please answer this question. Tell me when Diaby has played well? Give me the games? He’s played 58 times for Arsenal and I can only remember one game, a Champions League game away from home, when he played well. I just see a player who constantly gives the ball away.

Diaby was the best youngster in France playing against children who were about a foot shorter than him.

I always got behind other players like Eboue, Bendtner and Song, as I always knew these players would come good. Diaby will not come good.

  7. I wasn’t comparing a young Diaby to a Vieira in his prime. I was comparing Diaby now (at 22) to Vieira at the same age in 1998 when we won the double.

no wenger’s not gone mental. im pretty sure the comments he made will make his way back to diaby. so by comparing an arsenal legend to diaby, arsene’s probably just trying to get diaby to work on the defensive side of the game a bit more and give him confidence at the same time. its just mind games. that’s what makes him a great manager. i know diaby is a frustrating player right now. he can be brilliant one second and totally useless the next. but all of that is down to age and maturity. no one cant deny that he has got great dribbling and shooting skills – probably even better than viera’s. but he does need a lot of work on passing and tackling. he will come good with time no doubt. dont write him off as shit just yet

  9. anon

I think its worth writing him off as shit until he comes good.

  10. davi

    scott,
fair enough about song, eboue etc.
    I just presumed otherwise, apologies
but diaby has had good games for us, not big games
the match last week was an example
hes terribly inconsistent but second half he picked up and played great, he can be decisive
right now i think hes great cover for fabregas,
who knows wat will happen, maybe ramsey will overtake him before we see the best, but one way or another diaby is too talented to fail completely
one thing il say as well is that when diaby got through on goal at weekend, i knew he would score. hes probably our best finisher apart from eduardo, and maybe van persie when he’s on normal form
i have always hated blind following, and that’s what it sounds like when people say wenger knows, but im starting to get that impression too
he knows when they play poor like the rest of us, but he knows they’re young and will improve, and he knows how good they can be
it may not be what we all want to see, but wenger knows what hes doing developing these young players

  11. annon

    You don’t even know.

  12. scottpuffin

Fair points davi, and I take all of that on-board.
I do hope Diaby proves me wrong and goes onto be a world class player. I may even go easy on him for the next few months :)

I am suprised that after seeing players like Song, Denilson and Bendtner make quite unimaginable progress this year, people still make impetuous statements that would ultimately make them eat a humble pie. Have you forgotten that Vieira was bought from AC Milan at a time he was not seen by Milan as anything special? If you were asked for an opinion about him then, I wonderwhat it would have been. Wenger nutured him to the stature he attained. He(Wenger) is a genius and a magician; if says Diaby is like Vieira he is more likely to be correct that an uniformed analyst like you who prefers to worship the past rather than be enthusiastic about a very bright future. Diaby has a rare combination of talents which could even make him a better player than Vieira. His inconsistency is a symptom of youth, his true self will soon be unleashed.

  14. Lucifer

I think scott is saying that he has given diaby a chance, as most arsenal fans have, but after three years plus surely we can make a judgement or opinion of a player.
nobody would have ever doubted vieira when he signed for arsenal becuase nobody saw him play. we have seen diaby play for years and he is still not great.
wenger also signed some donkeys who he stuck with and never came good.

  15. Vieira in 1998 was in a different era. That was like taking a tank to the 1890′s. They couldn’t handle him. I think this is rich coming from someone who missed the Newcastle game. Arsenal and Diaby corrected their weaknesses from the first half and played a blinder in the second.
Vieira as a 21 year old playing in the prem will have the same problems as Diaby, no doubt.

  16. iqtesab

c’mon wenger just said they have similarities in style of playing. He did not say both of them are IDENTICAL. Spot the difference. He just meant that diaby had the qualities to play in viera’s position. And i totally disagree that diaby is shit. U r wrong…he’s too young to be judged like the way u just did. it’s just rude

  17. “Vieira as a 21 year old playing in the prem will have the same problems as Diaby, no doubt.”

He didn’t have the same problems at all!!

  18. Beasty

Vieira was twice the player Diaby was at the same age. He was commanding a team like Arsenal, and stood out as the star player. Diaby HAD potential, he doesn’t anymore.

  19. Sorry, I meant now. This Premiership is a marked difference from the one in 1997. That’s why he seemed so commanding because the Prem was not good enough. Diaby would have ‘owned’ the league at the same time as well, similarly Vieira will have the same problems if he was the same age and playing right now.

  20. the real brain

that is absolute nonsense! call yourself the brain, you are a dumbass.

  21. @ the real brain: The Brain is not meant to be true; more that I’m searching for more knowledge. Anyway how is that nonsense? The Premiership is way different now than it was when Vieira was playing, I don’t even need to go into much detail.

  22. the real brain

You’re stating that vieira (the best midfielder in england at the time) would be nowhere near as good as possibly the 46th best midfielder in the premiership 10 years on. You’re talking shit mate.

  23. Eric

Diaby would have owned the league in 1997? Not a hope mate.
You think Keane, Scholes, Vieira, Petit, Ince, etc would have been ‘owned’ by shitty diaby? you need to get your skull checked son.

  24. We’re never going to agree on Diaby chaps. How’s about I promise not to slag him off for 5 games? If he proves his quality in 5 games, he will give him another chance.
