I’m currently watching the Arsenal v Everton game from May 2005 on Arsenal TV, in which Arsenal won 7-0. Scoreline aside, I’m watching this and I’m thinking this was one of our greatest squad of all time. Our starting line-up consisted of the likes of Campbell, Cole, Lauren, Vieira, Bergkamp, Pires, Reyes and van Persie, and in the second half Henry came off the bench!
From the boys mentioned above I’d go as far as saying 7 of them players were world class at the time. I’m not sure we can field a team this season where you would consider 7 players world class – and when I say world class, I really mean world class. If you picked our best 11 you would probably go for Sagna, Clichy, Nasri, Fabregas, van Persie based on the last 2 months, and Rosicky when fit. This is not good enough! We have a lot of youngsters in our squad who have the potential to be world class, but we need to bring back the old days of having top quality experienced players. If we sign Arshavin, which I’m sure we will, then he will be one of these world class players we’re craving for, but for me, we need at least two more on top of that, possibly 3. A goalkeeper, a centre back, and a defensive midfielder. At the moment we have too many players who aren’t performing, most notably Diaby, and these players need to move on sharpish. Diaby is almost 23 and he’s still shit! Whens he going to get good??
Anyway, let’s hope Arshavin is the start of things to come and Wenger goes on to sign Buffon, Vidic and Mascherano in the transfer window too. He won’t though, he’ll sign a couple of 14-year-old Africans.
