I am going to be relatively brief today, but I just wanted to gauge opinion on what type of future Jay Simpson can have at Arsenal. The 20-year-old recently signed a new long-term deal with the club, so Arsene Wenger obviously rates him highly – but what do you think?
As we all know, Simpson has yet to feature in the Premier League for the Gunners. Instead, his appearances have been limited to the Carling Cup. Most memorably, he scored twice in the 3-0 victory over Wigan back in November as he made an excellent impression on his only start for the club.
The latest news regarding the youngster, other than the fact he has signed a new contract, is that he will be playing for West Brom from January. The Premier League’s bottom club are taking him on loan to give him some first team experience.
Will this do him any good though? Yes, he will be playing more regularly than if he stayed at Arsenal, but is playing for a team that loses more often than not really worthwhile? I suppose if he goes there and scores a few goals it will do no harm at all to his attitude or confidence. I just fear that a losing mentality might creep in.
Whatever he does, a goal or two against Manchester United in a few weeks would be more than welcome!
My final point about Simpson is regarding his age. At 20-years-old, he is older than the likes of Theo Walcott and was actually one of the older players in the Carling Cup games. With this in mind – why hasn’t Wenger given him a go in the Premier League yet?
Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Nicklas Bendtner and several others made their Premier League debuts while still a teenager, so I suppose Wenger just feels that Simpson isn’t ready as yet. Will he for fill his potential though? Can you see him making a name for himself in 2009?
Let me know!
