ADEBAYOR EYES TROPHIES AFTER ARSENAL BRUSH ASIDE FENERBAHCE

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor will not be content with another trophyless season. In fact, he has expressed the ‘need’ for the club to win some silverware this season. Adebayor hasn’t one a trophy since signing from Monaco in January 2006 and the club itself hasn’t tasted victory in a competition since the FA Cup win over Manchester United in 2005.

Something that Adebayor has pinpointed is that it is all well and good playing attractive football, but the end result needs to be trophies. The 24-year-old has said that it’s ‘the time to win something’ and that with the current squad of players – this is more than achievable.

It seems obvious what Adebayor’s targets are for May next year – he wants to be part of an Arsenal side that win their first silverware in four years. This would obviously mean a lot to a striker who has contributed seven goals already this season.

Adebayor did admit that winning trophies is ‘going to be tough’ and this is a very realistic view. There are a number of excellent teams fighting it out in all competitions this year and for Arsenal to emerge victorious in any of them, they need to play out of their skin.

So, which competitions are the Gunners more likely to succeed in? With consideration to what the football odds are suggesting – let’s take a look.

The Carling Cup – This, as ever, is a competition waiting to be won by Arsenal’s youngsters. So far in this year’s tournament, Sheffield United were brushed aside 6-0 and after reaching at least the semi-final in each of the last three years – Arsenal have a great chance to finally lift this trophy.

The FA Cup – This competition doesn’t get underway until January, so it is rather difficult to asses Arsenal’s chances. However, they haven’t made it past Round 5 since winning the trophy in 2005. Therefore, improvement will be expected.

The Premier League – In my opinion, this will be the most difficult competition to win. Chelsea and Manchester United are looking excellent right now and for Arsenal to win the league, not only would they need to go virtually unbeaten for the rest of the season – both Chelsea and Man Utd would need to have a significant bad patch as well.

The Champions League – This is the competition I can see Arsenal winning this season. The performance against a Fenerbahce side that hasn’t lost at home in 15 games was superb and would have sent a message to the rest of Europe. I’m certain an English team will win it again – so why can’t it be Arsenal?

Someone who believes Arsenal deserve success is Adebayor and after expressing his desire to win trophies this year, he hailed the form of Arsenal youngsters – especially Cesc Fabregas. He said that the Spaniard is a player that ‘every single big club want’. Hopefully, he can also be a player that guides Arsenal to some silverware this season as well. For that though, we will have to wait and see.
