According to The Sun, Arsenal are on the verge of pipping Portsmouth and Manchester City to the signature of Man United defender Mikael Silvestre.
At 31, he definitely seems to be the experienced player Wenger was talking about signing, and there is no doubt he is a powerful player too.
The versatile defender would make adequate cover for Gael Clichy at left back as Armand Traore doesn’t seem to be ready for that role just yet, and he I’m sure most Arsenal fans would feel more comfortable with Silvestre filling in at centre back ahead of Senderos when required. Versatility is something Arsene Wenger loves at Arsenal, and Silvestre is definitely versatile.
For a reported fee of around £750,000 being spoken about, it wouldn’t prove too much of a risk to bring in the ex-Inter Milan star.
I’m sure a lot of Arsenal fans won’t be happy with taking on what is effectively a Man United reject, but if anyone can get the best out of an unwanted player then Wenger is your man.
I don’t think Silvestre is the player Wenger was talking about signing before next weeks game against TC Twente, and I’m sure Wenger will add one more on top of Silvestre.
