ARSENAL TOP OF THE LEAGUE AFTER OPENING DAY VICTORY

Ok, the headline may have been a little deceiving, but it is true at the time of writing!

A 1-0 win over newly promoted WBA has got the season off to a good start, seeing as the opening game of the season is always a nervy one with pressure on the top teams to win. The full match report can be found here.

The only goal of the game came from new boy Samir Nasri who looks like he’s going to take no time to settle at all. He’s now scored more goals for Arsenal in 4 minutes then Hleb scored in 75 games. Job well done Nasri, you don’t need to do anything for the rest of the season now.

It wasn’t a vintage perfomance by Arsenal but they job was done and we’ve got three points, that’s all that matters.

As much as Arsenal fans will hate to admit it, I thought Eboue was one of the better players today and he looked very comfortable in that position. He’s not afraid to tackle, and there is no doubting his enthusiasm, his tenacity and his “want to win” attitude. Obviously, I’m not putting all hopes on Eboue to be our defensive midfielder for the rest of the season based on one game, and against a weak team, but he did well.

Theo Walcott was possibly the weakest player, at the moment he’s more of an impact player who can be bought off the bench to make a difference, but we didn’t sign him for that reason.

Nasri looks like an almost identical player to Rosicky is the way he plays, he has a similar work-rate, he likes to keep things simple, and he can create and score goals, which is what we’ve lacked from midfield since Rosicky’s injury.

Overall, I’m still confident that we’ll have a great season, and it will only be down to absolute bad luck or injuries that will prevent us winning a major trophy.

Justin Hoyte has signed for Middlesbrough, you can read the official news here. Great news for Arsenal, because he is diabolical.

The Spuds lose 2-1 to Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season. No surprise really. Similar quality, it would be like us losing to Barcelona.

spurs are so funny. they are rubbish dude.

eboue did look ok today. what a shot from gallas.

  2. Rodwell

scottpuffin, so what is needed to win convincingly from this match and to command games. You and Eboue – maybe its coz he is a defender so the bit of marking was good, but you don’t know with big games. But the guy is committed of course.

Eboue played a good game overall. I would suggest he not shoot if he gets some kind of opening. He’s shooting have been woeful really. Other than that, he did a good job on that Flamini role.

Walcott has been rubbish for the past couple of games. Again, his finish was disappointing. Everytime he tries to shoot, the ball hits a defender more than anything.

I wonder why Arsene decided not to play Vela as a winger while Rosicky is out. I know Wenger said he wants him as a Striker but seeing we’re short on Wingers, why not? He looks pretty good on the Wings imo. At least better than Walcott, for now.

Is it just me or did anybody else think Adebayor was rather selfish during that game? He had a chance to cut the ball back to Samir or Robin but he decided to go on his own.

I have to agree about Eboue he was probably our best player and if you watch the game carefully he was clearly under instructions to protect the defence. Watch his movement all game he was always trying to sit and drop a little without swaying.

Nasri and clichy linked up well, reminiscent of Pires / Cole.

Adebayor was selfish, he didn’t play well. Walcott was poor.

  5. Looks like Eboue will play a lot of games this season. He’s not been great but he is the most versatile player in our squad, and every squad needs one of those.

I have a sneaky feeling Wenger might sign two players before the transfer window, a defensive midfielder and another winger. The defensive midfielder is a given, but the way he keeps going on about signing one player could be a smokescreen for a winger too.

I’m hoping he’s got Eboue lined up as back up right-back now Hoyte has gone, and Walcott cannot be our only right winger. Not good enough just yet, and he can’t be expected to play every game!

it’s the points that matter in these games now, so the result is good. lessons: walcott shouldn’t be starting, and the squad still needs cover, eboue can do a job but must polish his game, and we need three more quality players to challenge for any honours.
