ARSENAL STAR OF 2008-2009?

Every season, one of our players seems to hit form out of the blue, and it’s generally one of the players who isn’t necessarily a fans favourite.

Last season we had many players in this category, Hleb, Flamini, Adebayor and to a certain extent Song. The fans were even getting a little annoyed with Theo Walcott but he seemed to really turn it around towards the end of the season, and hit a nice little patch of form.

I have a little prediction for next season, which I’m sure isn’t going to go down well with the Arsenal faithful, but I believe the player to to be unleashed next season could be Emmanuel Eboue. You’re probably thinking I’m absolutely taking the piss, but seriously I have absolutely 100% faith in Eboue, and it’s all a matter of confidence before we see a surprise package next season.

He is one of the best crossers of a ball at the club, he’s got pace, and he’s got a great engine on him. He may be a little petulant at times, but anyone who cracks hardman John Terry and takes him out for several weeks, is a top man in my books.

As we all know and we’ve been reminding ourselves for sometime, Wenger watches these players in training every single day and he definitely sees something that most Arsenal fans do not, and who would ever doubt his ability to spot talent.

I’m sure everyone will disagree with me on this. What’s your opinions? Do you think we have another dark horse in our ranks who could be the surprise package next season?

  • Brave post mate!

Must say I thought Eboue had a blinding season two years ago at full-back and was slightly bemused when Wenger bought Sagna.

Sagna though has proved to be a top signing and Eboue would be hard pushed to get back to 1st choice right back.

Who knows? If Eboue knuckles down and cuts out the petulant crap then he may endear himself to Gooners a little more to Gooners.

Maybe last season was a learning curve for him in a new position and he may prove most of us wrong!

  • you’re right wrighty, it is a brave post :)

i hope you’re right mate, but i can’t see eboue being a success. i suppose as you mentioned though, adebayor, hleb, flamini, and song were not great to start with so it could be a matter of time before he just clicks. hope so.

  • I agree with Wrighty7 totally, he was absolutely one of the best right backs in the premiership before Sagna signed.

Us gooners were even giving young Theo and Bendtner a hard time this season, and it can’t help the confidence.

I just think we need to trust Wenger - he’s got it right so many times when spotting potential. He has got it wrong many times though!! :)

  • Good post Scott, I can see where you’re coming from, Eboue is a good player - he was just turned into a scapegoat last season.
Only thing is he isn’t the first choice winger when everyone is fit, we might see less of him this season than last!

  • He got in to great positions last season and if he made them count then we would have won the season (maybe). I feel he will be better definitely.

  • The promising news is that he can’t get any worse. :)

We always get a surprise package and I just get the feeling Eboue is going to be the one. I think Diaby has to prove a lot of fans of his worth too, he was great until he got his ankle cracked a couple of seasons ago and he just seems to have lost confidence in the tackle. Maybe why Wenger has stuck him on the the wing. Has moments of magic and then absolute lack of experience in his ability to release the ball at the right time.

  • Yeah I’ve got the same feeling, whilst he was very poor last season, he was learning a new position but Wenger perservered with him and a couple times he showed what he’s capable of although it was only in the odd 5 minute burst, but like you said Wenger must see something in him.

Of course I’m expecting great things from Theo with Vela to show his undouted potential.

  • he can t shoot thats his problem you want a least 10-15 goals from that postion

  • Wingers scoring goals is clearly something we’ve lacked over the past couple of seasons.

I still believe Rosicky is our most influential player, but he’s just never fit!!! Such a shame.

  • whan the changes are made . we will have massive improvement .like having matin’s as our striker

  • eboue is a superior athlete. last season he never deserved that much stick in my view, he was young in a new position. this year though he’ll face more scrutiny and likely competition. i’d like to see him more composed and more effective providing service and more consistent link up play on offense(and a left foot). two years ago i was drawing cafu-esqe parallels, last year i thought wenger maybe promoted him too fast. as wenger said ‘eboue provides much needed defensive balance’. was that because flam, cesc, and rosicky/hleb were not such a great defensive unit, they relied heavily on flam. at the end of the day, it’s up to eboue, he has all the tools. can’t resist, i thought martins would be a great addtion too, terrific foil for ade, rvp, bendt, good team intelligence and i did not see him miss one sitter last year and he was just ferocious at inter. wonder why we passed on him, i think he deserves more playing time at the castle and would score more.

  • I think it’s finally Robin Van perise’s time to shine.

  • I hope so JJ. He looked good against Madrid, and if he stay fit he’ll bang in 20 goals for fun. He would offer a lot more to the team then his goals though.

His fitness is the only stumbling block.
