This isn’t really a post about Arsenal, but pretty much the whole of the premiership.
We’ve seen a lot of great moments this season, and I’m going to put together my list of the the real heroes (sometimes the unsung ones) for each of the Premiership teams. I’ll be interested to hear what you all think.
ARSENAL
BACARY SAGNA -A lot of Arsenal fans have been raving about his performances this season and it’s really difficult to argue back. When Wenger spent £6m for a right-back at the start of the season, everyone thought he’d lost the plot, we had Hoyte, Eboue and Gilbert after all. How he proved everyone wrong again. He added power, organisation and speed to the back four, something which was definitely lacking before he arrived and after he got injured. I could have easily gone for Clichy, but he’s had a couple of concentration lapses whilst defending this season, something we have not seen of Sagna.
ASTON VILLA
ASHLEY YOUNG – Previously an Arsenal target, who Wenger didn’t really want to take the risk on with a move as he was priced out by Villa. It seems to have paid off for Villa, as he’s made 14 assists and scored 8 goals and helped Villa climb to 6th in the Premiership and earn himself and England call-up.
BIRMINGHAM
JAMES McFADDEN – I was going to go for Mauro Zarate but for me McFadden has been the most consistent and solid performer for The Brum, and I’ve got absolutely no doubt another Premiership team will snap him up next season. No disrespect to Birmingham, but he’s too good for the Championship.
BLACKBURN ROVERS
BRAD FRIEDEL – Another pick where I had a choice of a few players, and I decided to go for Friedel mainly down to the fact that he’s been one of the most consistent keepers in the Premiership over the last 5 years or so and continued in that trend last season. He’s got a mistake in him, but which keeper hasn’t?
BOLTON
GARY MEGSON – Escaped relegation with one of the poorest squads in the Premiership. Done a good job.
CHELSEA
MICHAEL ESSIEN – The only likeable player in the Chelsea squad. Was an absolutely dirty bastard, but seemed to have calmed down a lot on his game. Just seems to want to play, regardless of where he’s playing, and give 100% every single game. This is one player I’d love Arsenal to sign.
DERBY COUNTY
THE FANS – The worst ever Premiership team, but the fans never gave up. Most teams in the same position would struggle to fill half the stadium, but the Derby fans seemed to love every minute of the Premiership. Fair play.
Please feel free to add comments – agree or disagree as you like. Tomorrow will be “E-N” of the Premiership.
